Atwal elected Punjab assembly speaker, Dinesh deputy

Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Charanjit Singh Atwal (75), pro tem speaker and MLA from Payal (reserve) constituency, was unanimously elected as speaker of the Punjab assembly in Chandigarh today. BJP Sujanpur MLA Dinesh Singh was elected deputy speaker.

The name of Atwal, who earlier served as Lok Sabha deputy speaker and state assembly speaker also, was proposed by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and seconded by BJP legislature party leader Bhagat Chunni Lal.

Since no other name for the post was proposed by anybody else, Atwal, the pro tem speaker of the House, was unanimously elected as the speaker.

Two-time BJP MLA Dinesh Singh was unanimously elected the deputy speaker of the House.

His name was also proposed by Badal and seconded by Bhagat Chunni Lal.

Leader of the Opposition Sunil Jakhar welcomed the election of Atwal as speaker and Dinesh Singh as deputy speaker.
