After finding no takers in the past four auctions of 20 booths at the modern air-conditioned fish, meat and poultry products market in Sector 41C, the municipal corporation is all set to auction the sites once again on July 22, after slashing the reserve price.
During the previous bidding process on April 16, the MC failed to find any buyers for the 20 booths despite slashing the reserve price by 30%.
In that auction, the minimum monthly reserved licence fee for 12 booths measuring 21.21 square metres each was Rs 21,500 per booth, but now it has been brought down to Rs 15,000. For six 19.02-square-metre booths, the reserve price has come down to Rs 13,700 from Rs 19,500, while two wholesale booths measuring 39.51 square metres each will go for a minimum price of Rs 27,800 each against the earlier rate licence fee of Rs 39,600.
Surender Kumar, who participated in the last bid, said: "Why would anyone take the shops on such a high rent when the market is not even established? Moreover, the MC has forbidden slaughter in the shops. Also, the shops are being leased for a period of three years and by the time the market gets established, we will have to look for other shops."
He said during the third auction held in January, the interested persons had told the MC to slash the reserve price, but they were adamant. Now, when they have failed find any takers, they have reduced the price once again, he said.
The UT administration constructed the market and handed it over to the civic body in 2009 for leasing out the booths. The municipal corporation held two auctions in 2010 but failed in its endeavour.
On November 28 last year, taking a serious note of the municipal corporation's "disregard" towards the non-operational fish market, the Punjab and Haryana high court had issued contempt notices to the UT home secretary and municipal commissioner. The court had come down heavily on the authorities for "adopting a lackadaisical attitude".
