Union health and family welfare minister Gulam Nabi Azad on Saturday announced that a national cancer institute (NCI) and a national cardio care centre (NCCC) would be opened on the second campus of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Badhsa village in Jhajjar district.

"The AIIMS-2 will be developed as a world-class institution. An expression of interest has been invited through international bidding for drafting a master plan for the hospital and a committee headed by the union health secretary will finalise it," the minister said while talking to mediapersons after inaugurating the outreach out patient department (OPD) of AIIMS-2, 17km from Gurgaon, on the Gurgaon-Badli road. Azad was accompanied by Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The Haryana government has provided 300-acre land for the AIIMS-2 campus free of cost. The OPD will provide generic medicines free of cost.

Azad said, "The OPD will be an alternative to the one in the AIIMS, New Delhi. It will be the first OPD in the country where free medicines will be provided."

The OPD will comprise departments of general medicine, orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, anasthesia and general surgery. It will have diagnostic and laboratory facilities.

"It is for the first time in the history of AIIMS where the entire OPD operations will be computerised," the health minister said, adding that the centre had a capacity to handle nearly 1,000 patients a day.

The minister said the NCI would be the biggest cancer institute in the country and have 600 beds.

Hooda said the Gurgaon-Badli road would be four-laned at a cost of about Rs 250 crore. Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda described the AIIMS-2 as a gift to Haryana. "The hospital will act as a catalyst for development," he said.
