A five-day-old baby died at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, in the wee hours of Friday and the family has accused the hospital staff of negligence. An inquiry has been marked in the incident.
Kusum, a resident of Sector 40, delivered a baby boy on August 19 at the GMSH-16. According to the family, it was a normal delivery and the mother and the baby were discharged the next day. On Thursday, they came to the hospital for the baby's routine immunisation. The doctors examining the baby said he was suffering from jaundice and needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately.
According to the family, the baby was recovering but around Thursday midnight, after the mother fed the baby, he started breathing heavily. "We asked the nurse to call the doctor, as the baby was not well but she didn't heed our requests," said Sonu, the baby's father.
Sonu said by the time the doctor reached, the baby had died. The family has given a written complaint to the medical superintendent of the hospital, alleging death due to medical negligence.
The hospital officials said the baby was suffering from septicemia and was already critical. However, an inquiry had been marked.
In a similar case in February this year, Laddoo Tiwari and Sudha Devi, residents of Kajheri, had brought their baby to the emergency ward of the hospital and had alleged that their baby died as there was no doctor to attend to them for about half an hour.
