Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to direct the Union department of atomic energy to set up a state-of-art cancer hospital and research centre in the state.

Badal sought the hospital be set up under the aegis of tata memorial hospital and cancer research institute, Mumbai, and assured of fulsome support and cooperation of the state government.

In a communique to Singh, the chief minister sought his personal intervention to set up a cancer hospital in Punjab as part of the state government's concerted efforts to curb the growing trend of cancer cases in the state, especially in its Malwa belt.

Badal said that he recently visited the Tata institute in Mumbai and had detailed deliberations with its director Dr Rajendra A Badwe and his team for setting up a cancer hospital in Punjab.
