Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday directed the state Home Secretary to file a report on “simplification of procedures” for the release of prisoners undergoing confinement in the state in different cases beyond the term of their punishments.
“The procedure for release of prisoners is lengthy. The state Home Secretary has been asked to detail out a report mentioning simplification of the procedures to release prisoners undergoing jail terms beyond their punishments,” the leader of the House told the Assembly on a question presented in this connection by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Virsa Singh Valtoha.
“The officer has been asked to file a report within a month,” he said.
Earlier replying to the question, Jail Minister Hira Singh Gabaria said that “those convicts who have been rewarded life imprisonment their cases for premature release has been sent for consideration.”
“Out of 54 cases 16 have been pending with the office of Governor and 38 cases are under consideration with the Government,” he said.
In reply to an another question from Balbir Singh Sidhu of the Congress, the Chief Minister said that the total VAT collection during the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 were rs 5543.49 crore and rs 6773.76 crore respectively in the state.
