Keen for the safety of a large number of students from Punjab who are pursuing higher education and other vocational courses in Australia, where Indian students are being attacked, deputy chief minister Prakash Singh Badal appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take up the issue with his Australian counterpart.
In a letter to Prime Minister, Badal has urged him to immediately take up this issue with his Australian counterpart to stop discrimination and victimization of Indian students, who were now reeling under constant tension and insecurity due to attacks on their life and property.
A government spokesman said, "Australian government should be asked to curb these incidents effectively as it is a constitutional obligation of every nation to ensure safety of foreign guests on its land".
Badal also conveyed his sentiments to Union External Affairs Minister S M Krishna asking him to take up this matter with his Australian counterpart to ease the tension among Indian community students'.
Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was in touch with prominent members of the Punjabi community settled in Australia and New Zealand over the issue, the spokesperson said.
