The members of Students for Society (SFS) staged a protest against the alleged police action at Balad Kalan village of Sangrur district in Punjab, at the student centre in Panjab University on Saturday.

The members raised slogans claiming that police action was anti-Dalit. SFS president Arishdeep Singh said they strongly condemned the inhumane action of the police and these incidents reflected ‘bitter realities’ of the society, where the oppressed were unable to avail of even their legal and constitutional rights.

“We demand inquiry into the incident so that erring officials can be brought to trial and strict action should be taken against the erring policemen,” he said.

Nearly 23 persons, including 11 cops, received injuries in a clash between police and members of the Dalit community in Bhawanigarh in Sangrur on Friday. The Dalits had gathered in Balad Kalan village to get auction of panchayat land, reserved for Scheduled Castes, cancelled.
