Sub-divisional magistrate (east) Danish Ashraf reinforced ban on the use of plastic carry bags under Section 144 (power to issue order in urgent cases of nuisance of apprehended danger) of the Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), in the area falling under his jurisdiction, on Tuesday. The ban on polythene bags will be effective with immediate effect.
As per the July 30, 2008, notification of the administration, all kinds of plastic carry bags are banned in the city (irrespective of micron/thickness).
In his Tuesdy's order, the SDM has prohibited the use of carry bags and containers made of recycled plastic to store, carry, dispense or package food stuff. The prohibition also includes manufacturing, stocking, distributing or selling of carry bags made of plastic.
"The use of polythene is a serious hazard to health of humans as well as animals. This is an initiative to change the mindset of people and an attempt to encourage people to use bags made of cloth or jute to save the environment and to make the city clean," he added.
Ashraf has said raids and routine checkings will be made in the area under the SDM (east) and those found violating will be prosecuted under the Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Municipal Corporation Act.
