Alleging humiliation at the hands of senior officials that he name in a note, a chief manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Ajay Sehgal, 51, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on the Chandigarh-Ambala track near Vikas Nagar, police said.

The incident took place around 4.30pm on Wednesday and, on Thursday, the post-mortem examination was conducted and cremation held. Before the police found out at 6.10pm on Wednesday, several trains had passed over the body.

Posted as branch head at PNB, Sector 20, Panchkula, Sehgal named PNB field general manager JK Gupta and circle head AK Gupta for his suicide, both of whom were booked for abetment but not arrested. Both have their office in Sector 17, Chandigarh. The police took cognizance of the suicide note and a complaint by Sehgal’s wife. “We have begun investigation under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. Arrests may be made in a day or two,” said Aman Singh, station house officer of Government Railway Police, Chandigarh.

Not only did his wife claim he was humiliated “for not sanctioning loans to certain favourites”, but colleagues also said he was severely pulled up by JK Gupta at a meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Two hours later, Sehgal committed suicide. The suicide note, accessed by HT, was brutal in its content, saying that “my last wish is to throw my body in front of dogs”.

HT called both accused but someone else picked up the phones and refused to reveal their whereabouts. Sources said they did not attend office on Thursday.

Sehgal is survived by his wife Rama Sehgal, a son and a daughter. He belonged to Amritsar and was earlier head of PNB debt recovery at Chandigarh.
