Loyal football fans and new converts to the beautiful game from all age groups stayed awake till the wee hours of Monday to cheer for their favourite team as Germany and Argentina battled it out at the Fifa World Cup final match. Besides being glued to their television sets, the fans were active on social media through the day and night.
The buzz about the final was trending on social media for the whole of Sunday. Some fans chose to stay awake and readied for 12.30am, while others, mostly schoolchildren, slept early and got up with alarms set for midnight to support their teams. Even those tricity residents who supported teams that could not make it to the final displayed true sportsman’s spirit and stayed up the night to root for the team that played better. Panjab University student Akshay Chaudhary, 25, said, “I am a die-hard (Argentina captain Lionel) Messi fan. My mind knew that Germany were a tough team to beat but my heart didn’t want to believe that Argentina lost. But no hard feelings.”
The wait for the lone goal was long but tweets and Facebook status updates continued through the match with many uploading pictures and comments, reflecting the highs and lows.
Twentyseven-year-old Rajni Jassal, an assistant professor at Panjab University’s School of Open Learning, followed all matches in this tournament. On Germany winning the World Cup, she said, “They deserved to win. Their team work and form became apparent during their semi-final match when they beat host Brazil 7-1.”
Some celebrated others struggled to come to terms with the result but there can be only one winner even after a hard-fought game. After a month-long carnival, the football fans now have to wait for four years to go FIFA crazy.
