Local MP Ravneet Singh Bittu on Tuesday congratulated chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for constituting the drug prevention board.
Speaking to HT on phone, Bittu said he had demanded the constitution of the board while he was the Anandpur Sahib MP, adding that finally, the chief minister had understood the need to form the board.
Bittu said the formation of the board was the "outcome" of the result of Lok Sabha elections in Punjab as drug addiction became the election issue and people voted against the SAD. "However, it is never too late as the move can help deal with drug peddling and problems faced by addicts and their families," he said.
Making a few recommendations, the Ludhiana MP said the chief minister should make sure that NGOs and activists who had put up a fight against drugs should also be incorporated in the board. "Bureaucrats are already overburdened, hence they would not be able to do justice to various aspects that need to be addressed by the board. The board should not be a toothless body but powerful enough to dole out punishment to those guilty of peddling. Also, rehabilitation of the addicts is an important factor that needs to be considered by the board so as to ensure that there are no relapses," Bittu said.
