Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu raised the issue of pending release of `3,100 crore for paddy procurement from the Centre to Punjab, in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
“Ever since the BJP government came to power, first the hardworking farmers of Punjab who toiled and [made] the barren lands of Gujarat fit for cultivation were uprooted from that state, and now the farmers of Punjab are suffering due to the wrong policies,” the Ludhiana MP alleged in the House, as per a press release issued here.
He underlined the “daily bickering between SAD and BJP”, alliance partners in Punjab, that “is immensely harming the interests of farmers”.
“This is for the first time that the central government has delayed the payment to the farmers. The Congress-led government in fact paid the farmers within 24 hours,” he claimed.
Taking a further jibe at the BJP, Bittu said, “It appears as if the Union government is punishing all the farmers of Punjab for the defeat of Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha polls. The Union government must clarify whether the farmers should or should not sow wheat and paddy in future,” he retorted. Jaitley, now finance minister, had lost from Amritsar to Congress veteran Capt Amarinder Singh.
At the end, Bittu urged the Centre to “urgently” release the “much awaited” `3,100 crore “as already the debt-ridden farmers are not only facing a lot of difficulties in getting their children married but are also not even in a position to pay the fees of their school-going children”. “The farmers, due to financial crunch, may resort to suicide,” he stated.
