Claiming that the case invoked under National Security Act (NSA) against BJP Philibit candidate Varun Gandhi smacked of `political vendetta', the BJP on Wednesday accused the Election Commission of working on the behalf of `some big power'
"The charge of attempt to murder against Varun is ridiculous and smacks of political vendetta," said BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj.
Accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of acting on behalf on "some big power" in the Varun Gandhi's case, he said that the ECI had made itself the complainant, prosecutor and judge.
"In Varun's case even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and his cousin sister Priyanka Vadra also spoke against him. One can understand under what pressures Election Commission had to work," he claimed.
"The case against varun is a result of competitive minority vote bank politics between the BSP and the Congress," he said.
Punj described the case against Varun as a bad sign for democracy, and said that the ECI had jumped the gun in this case as the claim of Varun had not been scientifically verified.
