A day after the five cops accused of rape were sent in police remand, Saurabh Joshi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor backing the victim's case, on Saturday picked holes in the police investigation and alleged that she had not been "attended to properly" by the police. Addressing the media seated next to the victim's cousin, Joshi demanded that the probe be shifted to an independent agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the police of some other state.
Joshi apprehended that since cops from the UT were involved, the police department may "play with the investigation in order to ensure final acquittal of all the accused".
He underlined how the girl had been made to wait for a medical examination for more than six hours. "And the doctors, instead of being sympathetic, behaved rudely with the victim and her brother," he alleged, adding that the investigating officer of the case, Usha Rani, also tried to broker a compromise between the accused and the victim.
He also objected to how the statement of the girl had been taken in the presence of the accused, and how the inquiry officer commented that it was a case of "love gone sour". "Till date, no copy of the FIR has been provided to the victim or her family," Joshi said.
But inspector general of police (IGP) RP Upadhyaya told HT, "A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed, and the case is being investigated from all angles. Scientific tools of investigations are being used. All steps have been taken, from arresting the accused, dismissal from service, recording of statement of victim under section 164 of the CrPC, in 48 hours. But if the case is transferred to any independent agency, we have no objection."
Cops praised by another BJP leader
Even as party councillor Saurabh Joshi was pointing out deficiencies in the police investigations into the alleged rape of a minor girl by five UT cops, BJP's veteran leader Harmohan Dhawan lauded the force for its quick action arresting the accused cops, dismissing them and recording the victim's statement. When Joshi was asked about it, he said he was not aware of any such statement.
