The Punjab and Haryana high court has granted anticipatory bail to BJP councillor Ravi Kant Swami in a case where he allegedly made casteist remarks against Panchkula municipal corporation executive officer Dr SK Chauhan.
Swami was on the run since November 5, 2014, a day after he allegedly made the remarks. Following the incident, sanitation workers had proceeded on strike to pressurise the administration to take action against him.
Thereafter, Swami was booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, criminal intimidation and for using assault or criminal force to deter a public servant.
However, the sanitation workers continued their stir, seeking Swami's arrest. It was only after district BJP president Vishal Seth assured the workers that Swami would be expelled from the party that the workers relented.
His anticipatory bail was earlier rejected from the lower court. Earlier, a woman had levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Swami, but the matter ended in compromise.
