BJP creating hurdles to uplift poor: Rahul Gandhi

chandigarh Updated: Oct 25, 2012 20:43 IST

Terming the Gandhi family "pro-poor", Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday made a scathing attack on the BJP for creating hurdles in the way of UPA government.

"We have introduced Land Acquisition Act and Food Security Bill so that farmers can get best price for their land and the poor can get food. But BJP has put hurdles. This is not the loss of BJP but the loss of poor farmers who own the land," Gandhi said while addressing election rallies at Keylong, Solan and Kangra in Himachal Pradesh for the November 4 polls.

He said: "BJP is hardly concerned about the loss of farmers. They does not want to debate. They do not want to talk. They just oppose. They fear that if acts like Land Acquisition and Food Security Bill are passed they will lose the 2014 elections. This is their mentality."

Gandhi said the BJP did not want to run Parliament smoothly in the previous monsoon session and number of important bills could not be passed.

The Congress has worked for the welfare of far flung and tribal areas like Lahaul Spiti and it was due to efforts of his party that such areas could be brought to mainstream of life.

"BJP talks about corruption. But in Himachal Pradesh the land of poor people is being given to the influential ones.
The biggest weapon to fight corruption is RTI. We have taken action where there was corruption. Our ministers are in jails," the Amethi MP said.
