BJP leader shot dead in P’kula

BJP Yuva Morcha block president Ashutosh Bharadwaj, 25, was shot dead on Sunday night at his home in Saketri in Mansa Devi Complex.

BJP Yuva Morcha block president Ashutosh Bharadwaj, 25, was shot dead on Sunday night at his home in Saketri in Mansa Devi Complex.

Police claim that three attackers, relatives of Congress women wing leader Saroj Hooda, barged into the house and shot at Bharadwaj and also attacked him with swords on arms and head. Bharadwaj’s brother Rahul was also attacked as was their father.

Ashutosh was taken to General Hospital , Sector 6 , Panchkula, from where he was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. Rahul and Krishan were also admitted to the PGIMER and are now out of danger. The attackers have been identified as Sanjay, brother of Saroj Hooda, and Tinku and Ajay, also related to Hooda.


There was tension between the two f amilies suppor ting different parties since election times. On November 27, 2013, there was fight between the two families and proceedings were initiated against Bharadwaj’s family under the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Hooda’s son Arun allegedly took Sanjay and other attackers to the house of Ashutosh. At night, both Ashutosh and Rahul were sleeping on the first floor of their house in different rooms. The doors of the house were kept open for air circulation. The attackers alle gedly entered the house and allegedly killed Ashutosh.


In the mor ning, more than 500 BJP workers led by local BJP leader Gian Chand Gupta, gheroaed the Mansa Devi Police station, protesting alleged police inaction. Heavy police force was called to the police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police ( DCP) , Panchkula , Ashwin Shenvi, had to intervene and only after that the crowd could be pacified. The post mortem of Ashutosh was conducted at General Hospital, sector 6, after which the body was handed over to family members.


The police have so far recovered two swords, one live cartridge and shell from Ajay’s house. Ajay was one of t he attackers. When he was escaping from the roof of Ashutosh’s house, Krishan over powered him and locked him in the washroom. When the police came, he locked the door from inside and the police had to break open the door to arrest him.

The police have registered a case under Sections 148 (for rioting being armed with deadly weapon), 149 (for being a part of unlawful assembly), 323 (for voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (for house trespass after preparation of hurt, assault) and 302 (for murder) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act.


Ashutosh Bharadwaj is survived by two-and-half-year-old and 9-day-old daughters and wife. His friends said that he wanted to throw a party on the birth of second daughter. The heart rendering scenes could be witnessed at Ashutosh’s house. The family members alleged that the accused had pre-planned the murder. Victim’s mother said, “They have killed my son and orphaned his children. He was to throw a party to celebrate the birth of baby girl but who knew that she would not be able to play in the laps of her father.”

“We have arrested Saroj Hooda, Rameshwa Dyal Giri, who runs two temples in Saketri area, Hooda’ sons-Manu, Tarun and Arun. Sanjay, the person who fired at Ashutosh is absconding. Among the attackers Ajay was arrested earlier while Tinku is absconding,” said Mansa Devi SHO inspector Ajay Disodia.
