In a second case of an MLA of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance being caught on the wrong side of the law, the CBI on Thursday arrested BJP legislator Raj Khurana in an alleged corruption case.
The CBI led by DIG Mahesh Aggarwal, which swooped at the residence of Khurana in Sector 39 here late on Wednesday night questioned him and a state government employee Devinder Singh before arresting them under Prevention of Corruption Act, a senior CBI officer said.
According to a complaint, Devinder Singh had allegedly demanded money on behalf of Khurana, is also a Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Finance) in the Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP alliance government, for further giving it to a Punjab minister for getting some official work done, he said.
However, in search and seizure report, the CBI maintained that it had not found any incriminating document from Khurana's residence, his son Tarun told PTI.
A spokesman of the BJP Punjab unit said that the action was aimed at defaming the party.
Khurana is a BJP MLA from Rajpura and had switched sides by leaving Congress to join the saffron party ahead of last Assembly elections in Punjab.
Earlier this week a court in Mohali had convicted CPS (Agriculture) Sohan Singh Thandal, an SAD MLA, in a corruption and disproportionate assets case following which he quit the post.
Besides, SAD MLA Sarabjeet Singh Makkar, too, invited trouble after his nephew's name cropped in a recent murder case of a hotelier at Jalandhar.
Last year, CPS Jagdish Raj Sawhney of BJP, too, resigned from his post after a spat with party colleague and Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla. Sawhney, an MLA from Batala, had levelled serious charges of corruption against Chawla.
