Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to ask the Punjab government to conduct a dope test of the staff as well as prisoners to detect and check drug abuse in prisons across the state.

The BJP MP from Punjab stated in his representation to the NHRC that a large number of youngsters were in the grip of drug addiction in the state, adding that the efforts of the government and NGOs alone were unable to control this problem.

In Punjab, four jail wardens from Kapurthala, two from Ferozpur and six ex-servicemen deputed for jail security had failed a dope test recently. He added that the same could be the case in all jails across the country and hence the issue needed immediate attention.

“Jail officials are involved in the drug business, which translates into a dark future for inmates, and human rights violation,” he added, requesting the NHRC to conduct a dope test of all inmates and the jail authorities.
