Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha district 2 general secretary Gurpreet Singh Badheri, who filed his nomination on February 9 as an independent candidate, withdrew his candidature on Wednesday.

The nomination was filed for the byelections for Ward Number 10 which are scheduled on March 1.

With Badheri walking out, now it's a direct contest between Congress candidate Bhupinder Singh Badheri and SAD-BJP candidate Hardeep Singh.

Speaking to HT, Gurpreet said, "There was some misunderstanding with the party high command and that has been cleared now. I have withdrawn my candidature and will support Hardeep Singh."

The seat was lying vacant after the death of Akali Dal councillor Malkiat Singh in October last year, who fell ill during the 10 day study tour to Port Blair, Kolkata and Chennai. SAD has fielded Hardeep Singh, brother of Malkiat Singh.

Ward number 10, which comprises Sectors 41 and 42 and villages of Badheri, Attawa and Buterla has population of nearly 35,000 and 24000 voters respectively. The elections will be held at 22 polling stations.
