Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh today said it was completely wrong to set up Operation Bluestar Memorial as it was not going to help the state in any way.

He also condemned the attempts to glorify Balwant Singh Rajoana convicted of murdering former chief minister Beant Singh.

Addressing a press conference at Amritsar, Capt Singh said Punjab cannot afford such things, like the Bluestar Memorial, as past three decades had only seen the state's economic decline.

He said setting up such memorials did not send the right signals. "We must look forward," he remarked.

The PCC president questioned the attempts at glorifying Rajoana, saying, "he (Rajoana) is a murderer who had murdered our chief minister."

He, however, clarified that he had only opposed the death penalty to Rajoana since he was against sentencing of capital punishment to anyone.

He said he had suggested converting Rajoana's punishment from death to life imprisonment which meant that he should remain behind bars for the rest of his life.
