The body of a 30-year-old man was found lying in the forest area of Dariya village near the railway crossing on Saturday morning.

The face of the deceased was disfigured as the accused is suspected to have used stones and sharp-edged-weapons to mask his identity.

The deceased was identified as Kali Das from West Bengal.

The incident came to light at 10:15am when a passerby noticed a person lying near the crossing.

The police, on receiving information, reached the spot and found the body lying in a pool of blood.

The body was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, and is now kept at the hospital’s mortuary for postmortem.

Police sources, after conducting preliminary investigations, said the accused had attacked Kali Das about seven times in the face.

Liquor bottles were also found lying near the body.

A mobile phone was also found, which helped the police identify the deceased. Kali Das had come to the city to visit his sister staying at Hallo Majra.

Police officials said Kali Das left her house on Friday night and told his sister that he was leaving for Kolkatta.

Police sources maintained Kali Das’s death did not appear to be a case of robbery as the mobile and purse were found intact.

Police suspect that Kali Das may have been killed following an argument with someone.

Investigations into the case are on and a case of murder has been registered.
