Who are they?
A Chandigarh-based three-member rap and hip-hop band called Raptilez 1O1. It consists of a Punjabi rapper, Tubonez, an English rapper, Mista Rider, and a music producer, Nugget.
Why should you care?
This is one of the oldest rap crews from the tricity that mixes different genres, such as hip-hop, R&B and pop, to create something new every time. They create their own music, write lyrics and compose songs that are a mix of English and Punjabi. One of their songs, Maut De Pujari, earned almost 80,000 hits on YouTube since it was released two years ago, while Rehan De got about 30,000 hits in a year. The two songs also got almost 10,000 plays on the website, ReverbNation. Also, Nugget is a 16-year-old boy who started making music when he was only 13.
How long have they been around?
Since 2009. Why Raptilez 1O1? The name comes from the word, reptiles. They believe that reptiles are unique creatures and that’s exactly what they represent: originality. So, they replaced the ‘e’ in reptiles with an ‘a,’ and added a ‘z’ to make it Raptilez.
What makes them click?
Raptilez 1O1’s motto is to give audiences something new every time. Their songs are both emotional and fun. The band also claims to have been brought together by its passion for music and not for fame or money. The members say they try to come up with lyrics which can be easily understood. However, they are also always open to new and different ideas for making good music.
What is the one thing they hate about upcoming city-based bands?
“Nowadays, people think that dressing as a rapper makes them a rapper,” echo the band’s members. Raptilez 1O1 is of the opinion that a lot of city bands make songs without any knowledge of music and start referring to themselves as rap stars after releasing a song on Facebook. But, they really don’t care what others do, and instead do what matters to them.
Why do they like performing in Chandigarh?
“Chandigarh is our hometown and it’s always a good feeling to perform amongst our own people. The crowd of this city has always supported us,” say Raptilez 1O1’s members. So far, they have performed at Peddlers, Blue Ice, Zinc, Score, Voodoo, Arizona, Rock & Rio and various colleges near Chandigarh. Every Wednesday, they perform at Peddlers with another R&B artiste, Frank.
What are they remembered for?
So far, they have released 12 songs on YouTube, which received a good response. They have also composed, written and sung the title track of an untitled Bollywood movie directed by Kabir Sadanand. Also, Raptilez 1O1 was recently shortlisted in reality TV show, India’s Got Talent Season 4, being the only one of the four groups selected from Punjab. Currently, they are shooting for their first music video to be released shortly.
