Brick Kiln Owners Association, Rupnagar, on Monday said they would continue their protests against the National Green Tribunal (NGT)'s recent decision to make it mandatory for brick kilns to get environment clearance.
At a meeting held at HMP Resort here on Monday, the association decided that brick kilns in the district would remain closed till their demands regarding environment clearance for brick kilns were fulfilled by the NGT.
District president of the association Amarjit Singh Saini said it had become difficult to run the brick kilns after the NGT's decision announced one and half months ago.
He said the brick kiln industry was already facing a crisis due to the shortage of sand and gravel. He said hundreds of persons were employed at brick kilns and the closure of brick kilns for an indefinite period would affect their livelihood.
The president demanded that brick kilns must be exempted from environment clearance. He added that a single window system for disposing issues related to brick kilns should be set up by the government.
