Police on Tuesday said that militants in south Kashmir's Shopian area gave them a slip after a brief encounter on Monday evening.

A police spokesperson said, its personnel launched an operation in an orchid at village Maldora while acting on specific information.

"While the cordon was being laid, militants fired at the police party. The police refrained from retaliating due to the presence of civilians working in the orchid," he said, adding that the militant escaped taking advantage of the situation.

During the search operation, an INSAS rifle was recovered from the orchid along with a magazine and ammunition.

Meanwhile, in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said it recovered three grenades in Kokernag forests on Monday evening.

"At the tip off, the police launched search operation in the forest area of Kokernag and recovered three rusted hand grenades. Police have registered a case in this regard," said the spokesperson.
