Dismissed UT constable Basant Singh alias Bunty, 26, along with his accomplice and beloved Sarita Rani, 23, who is five- month pregnant, will face trial for murder as the district and sessions judge SK Aggrawal on Tuesday framed charges against the duo for murdering UT police inspector Sucha Singh.
The trial in the case would commence on September 21 when the court would begin recording of prosecution evidence, indicating that the trial in this case would be fast tracked.
“Bahut jaldi hai, judge ko bolo thodi baad ki date de (It's too early, ask the judge to give a later date)”, was all Bunty was heard saying to the defence counsel who agreed to framing of charges without submitting arguments.
As per the chargesheet, Bunty had stabbed UT cop Sucha Singh six times, while his accomplice Sarita attacked home guard volunteer Jatinder Singh from preventing him to help save Sucha.
Inspector Sucha Singh, 57, was done to death by Bunty on the intervening night of June 7 and 8. Bunty and Sarita were arrested from Delhi and are in judicial custody.
Bunty and Sarita had murdered Sucha while on the run after a double murder in Sonepat. The duo was to catch bus from Sector 17 when Sucha and Jatinder, who were on night patrolling, questioned them. Irked over being asked to move to police station, Bunty attacked Sucha.
The UT police have chargesheeted them under section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC.
Crucial evidence against the duo Sucha's dying declaration
“On the intervening night of June 7 and 8, I was on night checking, when I saw a couple standing in a suspicious manner. After I didn't find couple's replies about the purpose of their presence there convincing, I asked them to come to the police station for verification. Bunty got angry and attacked me with a knife and inflicted injuries on my chest, neck and back. When driver Jatinder intervened, he was also attacked with the same knife. With both of us injured, the man snatched the keys of the police vehicle from Jatinder and sped away.”
Accounts of eyewitnesses
In his statement, home guard volunteer Jatinder Singh said, “Bunty repeatedly stabbed Sucha with knife and we struggled for 10 minutes. I called up the PCR number about four times when Bunty was brutally stabbing Sucha.”
“I pulled the hair of the female accomplice and dragged her and she screamed to divert Bunty's attention and he rushed towards me to save the woman only to return and stab Sucha again,” read Jatinder's statement.
UT police constable Anil Kumar, who was posted as a security guard in the old district courts, Sector 17, said he had threatened to fire but Bunty tried to attack him and he had gone to even get “help”.
Anil, who had joined the police force about two years back, was standing at a stone's throw from the spot where Bunty stabbed Sucha.
In his statement to the police, he said he saw Bunty stabbing Sucha while co-accused Sarita had attacked the home guard volunteer. Anil was also threatened by Bunty, who even jumped over the railing and also tried to stab him.
