Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib jathedar Giani Mal Singh and the Panj Piaras awarded 'tankhah' (religious punishment) to the caretaker of a gurdwara at Pathreri Jattan village near Rupnagar, and two others in connection with the incident of burning of 'Birs' of Guru Granth Sahib in a fire at the gurdwara on September 30.

Granthi Ramanjit Singh and watchman Paramjit Singh were also awarded the tankhah besides caretaker Baba Kesar Singh.

All three have been asked to clean the floor of Gurdwara Bhatha Sahib at Rupnagar for 11 days. They have also been asked to clean the shoes of devotees and listen to Gurbani kirtan at the gurdwara during this time.

Giani Mal Singh has asked all three to be careful in future to prevent recurrence of such an incident.

Seven 'Birs' were burnt in the fire at the gurdwara. Giani Mal Singh, who had visited the gurdwara, had taken a serious note of the negligence on the part of the gurdwara authorities, which had led to the burning of 'Birs'.

He had also taken a serious note of the construction of 'samadhs' and installation of a Shiva lingam in the gurdwara in violation of Sikh maryada. He had directed the three to appear at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib on Wednesday.

It is for the first time that 'tankhah' has been awarded to anyone over religious issues from Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib. Earlier, all religious issues pertaining to the surrounding areas were referred to the Akal Takht.
