In the second hike in less than a year, the Punjab government on Friday increased the bus fare by 4 paise per km, raising the overall increase since October 2012 to 17 paise per km. With this hike, the fare of an ordinary bus has touched 83 paise per km, which means a passenger would be paying Rs 4 more for every 100 km.
The AC bus fare has been hiked up to 99 paise per km. The fare for the integral coach has been hiked up to Rs 1.49 and that of super deluxe bus up to Rs 1.66.
This means the ride in an ordinary bus from SAS Nagar to Amritsar would cost Rs 194 instead of Rs 190. The fare had earlier been substantially hiked from Rs 160 to Rs 190 in October last year.
The motor vehicle tax has also been increased from Rs 2.75 to Rs 3 per seat. An official here said the state transport department would be earning Rs 100 crore more annually with this hike.
