A 60 year-old woman died while 20 other passengers sustained injuries in a head-on collision between two buses on the Kurali-Chandigarh road near Kurali around 9.30am on Monday.
The deceased, who was travelling in the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus that was on its way to Jalandhar from Chandigarh, was yet to be identified as no identity proof was found from her possession, the police said. However, the other bus belonged to Punbus (Punjab Roadways) and was en route to Chandigarh from Nawanshahar.
The police said the PRTC bus lost control due to speeding and had entered wrong side of the road, colliding with the Punbus bus. Onlookers rushed to the rescue of injured passengers after informing the police about the incident. Eyewitnesses claimed that drivers of both buses were driving in rashly.
Four of the injured persons — bus drivers Banjit Kumar (32) of Pathankot and Pargat Singh (46) of Gurdaspur, and two passengers Rajinder Singh (34) of Kapurthala and Pawan Kumar (40), a resident of Sector 40 in Chandigarh — were rushed to the GMSH, Chandigarh.
The other injured passengers were rushed to civil hospital in Phase 6 and were discharged after being administered first aid by doctors. Banjit, who was driving Punbus bus, sustained multiple injuries and fractured his right leg, while Pargat was driving the PRTC bus.
A case under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of IPC was registered against Pargat.
More than 50 passengers were travelling in the buses.
