Former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday appeared before a district court here in connection with the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) scam. The next date of hearing has been fixed for September 24.

While arguing for the other accused, the defence counsels, who had earlier moved an application on behalf of Nachhattar Singh Mavi, former secretary, Vidhan Sabha; Tara Singh, under-secretary, Vidhan Sabha; and KK Kaul, former senior town planner, Punjab; stated for their discharge from the present case, saying they had been falsely implicated as there was no mandatory sanction obtained for prosecuting them as they were public servants.

The arguments continued for almost three hours.

The Punjab vigilance bureau had booked Amarinder Singh and others on September 11, 2008, in the land scam case.

The vigilance bureau has already filed a chargesheet against Amarinder in the case before a special court in SAS Nagar.

Later, interacting with the media, Amarinder Singh said the SAD-BJP government was responsible for the bad financial condition of the state. During the Congress ruke, the state never faced any such problem, he added.

He said deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal was claiming that all was well with the state, then why was he seeking the Rs 20,000 crore package from the Centre.

He said the Congress would soon start the Jan Samparak programme in the state in wake of the parliamentary elections.
