Defying a nation-wide Modi-wave, Capt Amarinder Singh of Congress established an unassailable lead against BJP stalwart-chief strategist Arun Jaitley by over 67,700 votes after 8th of 14 counting rounds in the Amritsar Lok Sabha.

Former Punjab chief minister Capt appeared to be well on course to score the biggest win for the Congress which is poised for the worst rout across the country in the Lok Sabha polls since 1977.

Jaitley, a long-time Rajya Sabha MP, who made his electoral debut from the holy city, was on a losing wicket as he has trailed from the word go, while Amarinder has consolidated his lead round after round in the high-stake contest.

A popular ire against the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance in Punjab is being seen as game-changer in Amritsar where BJP’s Navjot Singh Sidhu had won the last three Lok Sabha polls on a trot.
