Price of the car should not be the only concern next time you walk into a car showroom in the city; ensure that the premises have fire safety equipment in place.
The fire wing of the municipal corporation has issued notices to the high-end car showrooms, especially those located on Delhi road, after they were found lacking in meeting the fire safety norms.
The fire wing inspected the car showrooms in the city following a car showroom fire at Jalandhar on May 8 in which property worth lakhs was gutted.
"The measure has been taken so that no such tragedy occurs here in Ludhiana. We have inspected all the showrooms and have come across the fact that most of these do not comply with the fire safety norms. The showrooms have been issued notices," said Bhupinder Singh, assistant divisional fire officer of the MC's fire wing.
Notices have been served on the showrooms of international car brands including Jaguar on GT Road, Sahnewal; Mercedes Benz, Renault, Chevrolet, Honda and others on the GT road.
The fire wing has issued a strict warning that in case these showrooms do not adhere to the fire safety norms, a complaint would be sent to the chief fire officer at Chandigarh for further action. "The showrooms may be sealed if fire safety measures are not found up to the mark in near future" said Bhupinder Singh.
Though the fire wing is short-staffed, the officials have been trying their best to ensure that buildings in the city are safe in case of a fire exigency The wing is still waiting for the government notification, which would enable it to seal a structure in case it fails to adhere to fire safety norms.
