Following the complaint from the father of a three-year-old rape victim here, the police on Tuesday registered a criminal case against a national Hindi daily, including its editor, reporter and photographer, for disclosing the identity of the victim by publishing her photo.

According to FIR, the said newspaper in September 2013 had published the file photo of the minor victim who was raped in a local colony here.

Deputy superintendent of police Anil Kumar Yadav said they received a complaint last week from the father of victim about the issue and after seeking the legal opinion from district attorney, a case under 228A (disclosure of identity of the victim of certain offenders), 120B (criminal conspiracy), SC/ST Act and Prevention Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered against the media group.

He said that police would ascertain the responsibility of the person responsible for the offence in its investigation and further action would be taken accordingly.

Crying foul over registration of a criminal case against the newspaper, the local media club has accused police of attempting to curb the freedom of media through pressure tactics. Media club president Anil Sharma said that a delegation would soon meet the senior police officers in this regard.
