Tricity residents are into a unique hobby of collecting cacti and other succulent plants. This one learns during a visit to the 33rd annual show of cacti and succulents, at Dr JS Sarkaria National Catcus and Succulent Botanical HUDA Garden, Sector 5, Panchkula.
Maj Gen CS Bewli, the president of the National Cactus and Succulent Society of India, one of the organisers, has nurtured the plant for 20 years now. “I visited a cactus show in the city in 1994 and fell in love with the plant,” he says.
Amarjit Singh Walia (66) has customised a coffee mug with pictures of varieties of cactus. Despite being associated with biology, he had little inclination towards nature. “Cactus, requires little care.”
Ravi Lal (65) owns 5,000 bonsai and a number of cacti. “I was living in Sector 27, Panchkula. There was a place that was used as a dumping ground. I donated my plants and turned it into a beautiful cactus garden.”
Having been a collector of cactus from Class 6, Rajendra Kumar Naijhawal (42) is a professional florist. “Minimum capital is required for the farming of this plant and there are job opportunities,” he adds.
