In a bizarre incident, a youth who snatched the gold chain of a woman resident of Dhakoli, swallowed it after he was caught red-handed by the local people on Tuesday.

The accused, Pradip Kumar of Mauli Jagran, along with his accomplice, Anubhav, came on a motorcycle at the Green Valley in Dhakoli. There, they snatched the gold chain of Reva Devnath, who was going to the market.

As she raised alarm, passers-by caught Pradip, while Anubhav managed to flee on his motorcycle.

Zirakpur SHO Ravinder Pal Singh said the accused swallowed the 25gm gold chain in a bid to eliminate the evidence, but people noted his move. They handed him over to police, who took him to a local hospital where through X-ray the gold chain was found entangled in the food pipe, he added.

"We are trying to get the chain out with the help of doctors," the SHO said.

Man robbed of Rs 1,200 at knifepoint at Sector 16

Chandigarh: A resident of Bapu Dham Colony was allegedly robbed of Rs 1,200 in cash at knifepoint near Shanti Kunj in Sector 16 on Monday evening.

The victim, Golu, alleged that while he was crossing the stretch near Shanti Kunj, which is close to the houses of several senior UT and Punjab officers, a miscreant came from behind and flashed a knife at him.

The miscreant then snatched Rs 1,200 from him, after injuring his arm when he tried to retaliate, he alleged.

The police have registered a case of robbery at Sector 17 police station in the matter. The incident has once again exposed the Chandigarh Police's failure in tackling the snatching menace. There are CCTV cameras installed at the Sector 16-17 traffic intersection, just next to the Shanti Kunj. Yet, the police were unable to identify the miscreant.
