A head constable with the Chandigarh police was arrested red-handed by the central bureau of investigation (CBI) while accepting a bribe of 1,500 near the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here on Thursday.
Sources in the CBI said head constable Dalbir Singh posted with the traffic police was accepting the bribe from the president of a local auto union near the PGIMER.
The sources claimed that the head constable was taking money as monthly instalment for not checking auto drivers for any violation. The cop was attached with the traffic police for the past one year and was deputed on duty near the PGIMER entry gate.
Singh had demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000, which later came down to Rs 1,500. He had divided the amount as Rs 50 from 30 auto drivers. The sources added that the cop had been threatening the auto drivers of challaning them as some of them were registered with SAS Nagar and required permit for plying auto in Chandigarh.
As the cop was arrested on the road and there was no place to do paper work, so he was taken to the law department of PU, being closer to the PGIMER, for completing further proceedings.
