The Special CBI court adjourned for a day the bribery case in which SP (city) Deshraj was arrested by the central agency on charge of accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe from a UT police inspector.
The CBI was slated to hand over to Deshraj's counsel transcripts of conversations recorded on October 5, 10 and 18 between accused IPS officer Deshraj and complainant SHO Anokh Singh.
After the counsel for the CBI requested the court for a week's time to obtain a copy of the transcripts and provide the same to the accused, the court asked the central agency to file its reply by Saturday.
Defence counsel Vishal Garg Narwana had urged the court to direct the CBI to provide them copies of the transcripts along with pre- and post-trap memos. On the other hand, the CBI prosecutor had opposed this on the ground that the case was at an initial stage.
The court had said that since the transcripts were relied upon by the CBI to arrest the IPS officer and also shown to the court and a copy of FIR furnished to the accused, there were no justifiable reasons to deny the transcripts to him. Since the pre- and post-trap memos were not referred to in the FIR, the request by the defence counsel for the supply of the same was untenable, the court had ruled.
