Central grant sought for crop diversification

Punjab agriculture minister Tota Singh on Sunday demanded special package from the union government for crop diversification in the state.

“Diversification can be successful, if farmers get good value for the produce,” said the minister, seeking financial assistance for the storage, marketing and transportation of perishable products.

He said the Punjab government would submit a detailed report to the Centre on how to make crop diversification seem attractive to farmers.

He mentioned the proposal for a permanent cargo station at the Amritsar international airport that the government had moved to the Airport Authority of India (AAI); and the proposal it had prepared for similar facility in Chandigarh.

Tota Singh said the Punjab gover nment had prepared a proposal for building Mega Food Park at Ladowal near Phillaur wand would take it to the union food processing ministry led by Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The project was worth Rs 130 crore, of which the Centre would contribute Rs 50 crore, he said.

Earlier, Punjab Agro MD Kahan Singh Pannu met the agriculture minister and briefed him about the projects to make diversification attractive.
