In a first-of-its-kind move, the state government on Tuesday launched six-month certificate courses for inmates of prisons in Karnal and Kurukshetra. Guru Brahma Nand Ji Government Polytechnic at Nilokheri, Karnal, will be the nodal center for training prisoners. Principal of the polytechnic SK Goel said female inmates would be trained in garment making and male inmates would be trained to become electricians.

He said these courses were introduced under a community development scheme of the union ministry of human resource development. Nearly 30 students would be enrolled in a batch for the course.

Goel informed that an inmate with a remaining jail term of two years would be preferred. He said the scheme aimed to provide rehabilitation and self-employment opportunities for prisoners after the completion of their jail terms. He added these courses would be conducted for free of cost.
