Residents of Bhurare village near Chamkaur Sahib are irked over failure of authorities concerned to redress the problem of wastewater disposal in the village.
When Chamkaur Sahib sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sayam Aggarwal, block development and panchayat officer Harinder Kaur and panchayati raj sub-divisional officer (SDO) Kamalpreet Singh visited the village to solve the issue, the villagers sat in a pool of wastewater. They even threw filthy water on the vehicles and raised slogans against the government.
Later, the villagers led by Chamkaur Sahib legislator Charanjit Singh Channi sat on a 'dharna' on the Chamkaur Sahib-Morinda road.
Village sarpanch Balwinder Singh Lovely said despite repeated requests of the gram panchayat, the officials concerned had not done anything to solve the problem. The streets had converted into a water pond and water had even entered houses.
He said the gram panchayat had passed a resolution to lay pipeline for the disposal of wastewater but the rival group in the village, which lost the panchayat elections, was opposing it.
Channi alleged that the officials of Chamkaur Sahib administration were deliberately not resolving the issue at the behest of local leaders of the ruling party. He said if the problem was not solved immediately, a dharna would be organised by the villagers.
Chamkaur Sahib tehsildar Jaswant Singh and BDPO Harinder kaur assured the protestors that the problem would be solved by April 15
