A day after claiming that her husband, former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammad, had been kidnapped, Anuradha Bali alias Fiza allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday morning. She consumed a large dose of an anti-anxiety drug.
She was taken to Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) here and doctors said her condition was stable.
The SAS Nagar police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Fiza under Section 309 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code), Varinder Paul, city superintendent of police told Hindustan Times.
Around 11 am, Fiza consumed about 25 tablets of Alprazolam at her house here. Her mother and a lawyer-friend were also at home when the incident took place.
“She was brought to the hospital soon after she took the drug. She is conscious but a little dazed. She will be kept under observation for the next 24 hours and then discharged,” said Dr Vipin Kumar Kaushal, medical superintendent, GMCH.
However, denying the suicide attempt, Fiza's lawyer Rohit Mahajan said, “She took a drug overdose by mistake.”
“She was repeatedly saying that her life was meaningless without Chand Mohammad,” said Rana Ghuman, Fiza's friend, who took her to the hospital.
Later in the evening, Fiza’s mother Savita Bali told mediapersons that her daughter had taken the overdose as she was a “little upset” over Chand Mohammad's absence. However, she denied any rift between the couple and praised her son-in-law.
Sources close to the family said the “kidnapping” drama as well as the alleged suicide attempt were the outcome of a dispute between Chand Mohammad and Fiza.
When Fiza failed to contact him after he left home on Wednesday, she cooked up the “kidnapping” story in desperation, they said.
