The residents damaged some vehicles and the police had to fire tear-gas shells to control the angry mob. The residents kept the body on the road and raised slogans against the police, alleging that had the police acted in time, the life of the girl could have been saved.

The girl had gone missing on Friday night and her naked body was found early morning on Saturday. There were injury marks on her private parts and neck, suggesting rape. The police said the victim had been strangled to death.

After finding his daughter missing at about 9pm on Friday, her father lodged a missing complaint with the police. SHO Devinder Singh said after victim's father approached them a team of cops kept searching for her throughout the night. However, the colony dwellers alleged that the cops were with them only till 2am.

The victim's father said, "We went to the police at about 9 pm and lodged a missing complaint. A couple of cops came along with us but they did not stay with us till the morning. The body was found at around 6.30am in the jungle by some colony dwellers."

A case under sections 302 (Murder), 363 (Punishment for kidnapping) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Assistant superintendent of police (East) Parminder Singh said, "We have started investigations and the post-mortem report was awaited. A panel of doctors is conducting the post-mortem and only after we receive the report, the section of rape will be added."
