The UT administration is planning to put a blanket ban on service charge being levied by eateries. Based on the clarification of the Union finance ministry that service charge is not a government levy, the UT administration is working on modalities to ensure that the resident are not fleeced anymore in the garb of service charge.
"Service charge is not a government levy thus we cannot allow restaurants and eateries to charge this cess. In this regard we are about to put in place legal framework to check the practice," said deputy ommissioner SB Deepak Kumar, who is also director, food, supplies and consumer affairs department.
"We are also planning to launch a helpline number on which residents can complain if they are charged service charge. There is need to start a parallel redressal forum for residents facing harassment so that they do not have to approach the consumer forum for such things," he said.
