The lone runway of Chandigarh airport has fast deteriorated in recent past and will undergo a modification in near future, a press release issued by the 12 Wing of Indian Air Force (IAF) said here on Monday.
The airport is jointly used by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for civil purposes and by the IAF.
"The runway's surface condition has been fast deteriorating owing to phenomenal increase in quantum of flying operations at this base," the press release said. "In the recent past, a concentrated and dedicated runway maintenance plan was executed with clockwork precision which led to minimal delay/ cancellation of aviation activities at this base," the release said, adding that more modifications were required.
The runway strip and its lighting are owned and maintained by the IAF. The press release said, "The runway's resurfacing is planned in near future. This includes extension of the runway's length and resurfacing of entire runway and aircraft-maneuvering area."
The IAF also plans to upgrade the airfield-lighting system.
