Union power and coal minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said Chandigarh could be the first city being developed as part of the ambitious ‘smart city’ project of Narendra Modi government as the city already had many requisite components in it.

Goyal was addressing the Chandigarh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at the party office in Sector 33.

He was on a tour of Haryana and Punjab and briefly halted in Chandigarh to meet the workers.

Stating that he loved the city and had been a frequent visitor for years, the minister said people of Chandigarh would have to make some efforts for the project, as Chandigarh had advantages over other cities for it.

He also exhorted the workers to work hard as the party was able reclaim the seat after three consecutive defeats in Chandigarh.

“People are unforgiving and demanding. If you do not work, they will punish you for the same. So, work hard continuously,” Goyal added.

He further said the Modi government wanted the involvement of public in governance and wanted to provide a transparent government and appealed to the party activists to raise the issues of public concern with the ministers concerned and also give them valuable suggestions for better governance.

Earlier, he was welcomed by Chandigarh unit BJP president Sanjay Tandon and local member of Parliament (MP) Kirron Kher at his arrival at ‘Kamlam’ BJP headquarters at Chandigarh.
