A local court acquitted a Chandigarh cop of rape on Tuesday. The acquitted cop has been identified as Gagan Kumar (a home guard in Chandigarh police), a resident of Dadu Majra in Chandigarh.

The case had been registered on April 24, when the victim stated that she got to know Kumar at PGI where her mother was undergoing treatment. She alleged that one day he assaulted her and forcibly took her to a room where he raped her.

Following the complaint, the police had registred a case under Section 376 (rape) and 323 (assault) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, the court observed that the victim had consented to physical relations with Kumar and on these grounds acquitted Kumar.
