City government school students can finally buy uniform for the new academic session as the UT education department has transferred Rs 3.5 crore to their recently opened bank accounts.
The department had to open bank accounts of over one lakh students of nursery to Class 8. It was decided to deposit the money for purchasing school uniform in these accounts so that the students did not remain at the receiving end due to the delay in procurement of uniforms like last year.
With bank accounts of around 97% schoolchildren opened to date, only a few accounts remain to be opened. The funds for these remaining students, however, have been handed over to their respective school heads.
"We have transferred money to the bank accounts of the students. We are left with a very few accounts to open. These are of those students whose parents do not reside in the city, due to which there is a delay in procurement of documents. We have transferred their money to their school principals," said director public instructions (schools) Kamlesh Kumar.
The department failed to meet several deadlines for the task. The accounts were to open by March 31, but banks found it difficult to implement it because of the closing of the previous financial year. Following this, the deadline was extended to April 10, which was further extended to April 15 and, finally, to April 25.
