The presence of municipal corporation (MC) office, which is just a few yards away from the Sector 17 parking, does not deter the parking contractors from fleecing people by overcharging.

Moreover, it was found that there were no signboards mentioning the rates at most of the places or were either defaced, which brings lax behaviour of the civic body to the fore.

In a reality check on Friday, Hindustan Times team found that, out of four parking lots, two were found fleecing people by charging double the prescribed amount. Besides, staff at both the lots was not using e-ticketing machines.

The contractor of Sahib Singh parking lot in Sector 17, who recently got the contract, was found overcharging. As per the parking slip, he can charge Rs 5 for six hours, but he took Rs 10 from our team for just five minutes.

When confronted, contractor Gurnam Singh, who was also present at the spot, said, “The attendant did not see the time on the slip. We have recently got the contract.” Surprisingly, the contractor had even defaced the signboard mentioning the per hour rates.

Chandan Bhist, a visitor present on the spot, said, “I come to this parking lot to deliver things daily and they charge Rs 10 for a few minutes daily.”

Similarly, on a visit to Jagat Anand parking lot in Sector 17, HT team found that Rs 10 were being charged instead of Rs 5. On asking, attendant Manoj Tiwari said, “I thought, you are parking your vehicle for the entire day.” No signboard was found at the entry of this parking lot.

Contractor of Jagat Anand parking lot Gagan Singh apologised for the same and assured he would not do it in the future. On April 2, HT had reported how parking contractor ouside Elante mall and at Sukhna Lake were charging double the prescribed amount for parking.

MC additional commissioner Sarita Malik could not be contacted even after repeated attempts.

Superintendent of the parking lots Kashmira Singh said, “We have received complaints of overcharging from Sahib Singh parking lots and have already directed the inspectors concerned to check. We will impose fine on them accordingly.”

On asking, why there are no signboards mentioning rates at the entry points, he said, “We will get it checked.”

As per the contract, the civic body can terminate the licence deed of the parking contractor before the expiry date on a month’s notice or pay money equal to the licence fee for a month, but the civic body has limited the penalty to fines.

If you notice any violations, you can complain to superintendent, parking lots, Kashmira Singh on mobile number 9872511-171 and toll-free helpline number 155304.
