The boys of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) have done the city proud by getting past 13 other teams to win the north-northeastern zonal leg of the Manchester United Premier U-15 Cup (India round) at Tata Football Academy complex, Jamshedpur, (Jharkhand) on Saturday.
After winning the zonal leg, Chandigarh and Jharkhand have qualified for the semifinals of the tournament that will be played in Goa from May 10. A team each will come through from the south-west and east-west zone.
In the final, CFA players defeated the hosts 1-0, with Samuel scoring the winner for the UT team. Nishu of CFA was adjudged the best player of the tournament.
The Chandigarh team remained undefeated throughout the event. In the league stage, they topped their pool by beating Meghalaya, Manipur, Odisha and Tripura. In the semifinal, Chandigarh defeated Manipur 2-0 to enter the title clash.
"I am very happy with the performance of the team. All the boys, especially Nishu, Arjit and Daniel, were outstanding throughout the tournament. I am sure that if they continue to play like this we will also emerge winners amongst the last four of the tournament's India leg," said CFA head coach Harjinder Singh.
The team that emerges winner from India would represent the country in the Asian zone tournament to be held in Indonesia from May 27.
The team winning the Asian zone will qualify for the main event to be played in England.
